I would like to take the opportunity to thank my OSF Family for the wonderful care given to me during my hospital visit. Dr. Wellman's concern and research with Dr. Vallejo to ensure everything would go smoothly during my surgery gave me great confidence. Dr. Chandler's smiling face in OR holding, and the reassuring voice of Bunny after surgery telling me that she was there and it was going to be okay, was enough to let me know that I was in the best of care. My caregivers, Yaw, RN, and Elise, RN, were WONDERFUL, CARING, COMPASSIONATE, AND GENUINE. Elise punched out from her shift and returned to my room to make sure I got in my walk before going home. She walked with me for 45 minutes on her own time. Each and every caregiver from food services, housekeeping, and CNA's to nurses, took the time not only to care for myself, but also to care for my mother, who traveled 18 hours on a bus to be with me.

I'm proud to say that OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is my hospital of choice!

A visitor at OSF SJMC shares her experience with the difference in our care:

“I just wanted to compliment your ER. Recently, my friend became very ill with a kidney stone. She was violently ill and in a lot of pain. We were visiting from Chicago. We came to your ER and my friend was taken in before I could even park the car! The nurse, Kim, who admitted my friend, was so understanding. The nurse, Amanda, who took care of her, was so nice, and I even had to call her later with questions and she helped us then, too. We were so impressed with our hospital.”

An OSF volunteer shares their experience with a patient’s gratitude:

In a Patient Advocate visit, Bonnie in PICU was raved about to an OSF St. Joseph volunteer. She said Bonnie was helpful, kind, thoughtful, competent and answered her questions. She said that whatever she needed, Bonnie was always there. She said Bonnie is getting married and moving to Kentucky, and she will be a great loss to SJMC.

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center to Sponsor Annual P2D2 Medication Collection

Do you have unwanted, unused or expired medications sitting in your medicine cabinet collecting dust? OSF St. Joseph Medical Center will offer you the opportunity to clean out your disregarded and forgotten medications at its annual “P2D2 Green Day Prescription Drug Disposal,” Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the grounds of the medical center.

The drop-off medication collection event offers a safe, convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of prescription, over-the-counter and veterinary medications, inhalers and mercury filled thermometers.

The personal name and address on the medications should be removed, but the name of the medication should be visible.

Items that will not be accepted at P2D2 include: illegal drugs, needles, syringes and biohazardous materials. A City of Bloomington police officer will be on the location to collect any controlled substances such as, Oxycontin and Vicodin.

Last year, OSF St. Joseph Medical Center safely disposed more than 400 pounds of unused or expired medications from the Bloomington-Normal community and more than 40 pounds of controlled substances were collected. Additionally, 15 to 20 pounds of unexpired medications and supplies collected were donated to the Community Health Care Clinic in Normal.

OSF St. Joseph Launches Initiative to Reduce Recurring Asthma Visits to PromptCare, Emergency Department

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, an estimated 25 million people, including 6.2 million children, in the United States suffer from asthma. Although Illinois has a higher rate of mortality from asthma than other states in the U.S., Illinois’ asthma rates have been declining at a higher pace than the U.S. – helping to bridge the gap.

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center is working to contribute to the state’s decrease in mortality rates from asthma by providing education to every pediatric patient who presents to OSF PromptCare with an acute flare-up (exacerbation) of asthma. The overall goal is to reduce the number of recurring visits to OSF PromptCare and the OSF St. Joseph Emergency Department for asthma, and instead, encourage patients to establish an ongoing asthma management plan with their primary care physician.

A recent grant from the OSF St. Joseph Foundation has allowed the medical center to purchase asthma education kits. Pediatric patients and parents will be educated on the proper technique and use of a peak flow meter, inhaler, spacer and diskus – whichever is prescribed. Nurses will facilitate this by showing patients short, educational videos that review the use of diskus inhalers, inhalers and the use of an inhaler with a spacer, as well as be given a demonstration on the proper use of medication with items from the asthma education kit.

OSF PromptCare physicians will also send pediatric patients home with an Asthma Action Plan, outlining how to manage asthma, recognize early signs or symptoms of an asthma attack and what to do during an exacerbation. Physicians and nurses will advise patients to follow-up with their primary care provider within three to five days following their OSF PromptCare visit to help reduce the number of recurring visits to OSF PromptCare and the Emergency Department for asthma.

Please share my thanks to Dr. Sabbun, Julie, RN and Sheila, RN, who provided fantastic care to me. Dr. Sabbun and Sheila kept direct pressure to my gum with their fingers for nearly two hours before the bleeding stopped. Kelly, I know you were there for awhile, and I’m not sure who else was helping when I nearly passed out. There was a very sweet young lady (I think her name was Megan) at the reception desk who stopped by to check on me too.

I also want to thank Dr. Ward, for your care when I came to the ED. Brittney, RN, was very caring both to me and my family. She sensed my fear and uncertainty so kept me up to date on all that was going on. My husband said that Ron, RN, was also very helpful when I first came in the door.

I always have felt that OSF St. Joseph Medical Center provided great care in the ED, but can now speak with certainty that my first-hand experience has proven it true.

The family member of a patient who was in full cardiac arrest and treated here at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center related the following:

After discharge, the patient visited his cardiologist in Champaign. The doctor told him that he was very fortunate that he was brought to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and had Dr. Murphy as his cardiologist who did multiple stents very quickly. The patient’s cardiologist further stated the patient probably would not have survived at any other hospital in the area.

The door to Cath Lab time on this patient was phenomenal. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s patient advocate located the patient’s family and kept his wife updated on what was happening as she was driving from Champaign to Bloomington.

I would like to thank everyone at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for the care they gave my brother. My brother came into the ED as a Code 60. The team work and efficiency exhibited by the ED staff in getting him from the door to intervention in 23 minutes almost defies belief.

He is here today only because of the truly heroic efforts of everyone involved. If this was the military, the ED would receive a Unit Citation that they could all be proud of, and they deserve it.

I do not want to diminish the efforts of anyone by singling out individuals; however, my brother has expressed special gratitude to on individual. He relates that upon arrival in the ED he was having difficulty remaining focused and “holding on.” He remembers Lauren Mosley, RN, who started his IV and stayed at his side through his ordeal. He says her commands of “Breathe!” and “Stay with me!” Kept him going. He asked me to have Lauren come up to see him in the CCC so he could thank her, and she graciously did so.

From Judy Swindle who kept my brother’s wife informed of his condition and comforted her frequently by phone as she drove here from Champaign, to the CCC staff who received my brother from the Cath Lab, everyone involved demonstrated to the world how it should be done.

I have never been so proud to be a member of the OSF St. Joseph Medical Center team. To everyone associated with OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, THANK YOU.

I entered OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, not really aware of how ill I was. The doctors, nurses, aides and entire staff were so kind and caring; complete professionals. I never heard a cross word from any of them.

One nurse in particular who spent a lot of time with me and was an inspiration to me (and my wife), was Annette Schneider. Her strength, competence and genuine concern was extraordinary and very much appreciated. She certainly is a role model for her peers. She should be commended for her extraordinary service.

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center emergency physician group – Heartland Emergency Specialists, LLC, have established an endowed scholarship in Eric Tapley’s name. They presented the scholarship as a gift to the Illinois State University Mennonite College of Nursing during the annual Nothin' but the Blues Festival in Bloomington, IL.

The Eric Tapley, B.S.N. Heartland Emergency Specialists, LLC Scholarship will be awarded annually in memory of Eric, who died unexpectedly in May at age 50. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center nurses and staff describe Eric as an extraordinary, fun loving, genuine, positive nurse who always put the patient first. The scholarship will be awarded to an Illinois State nursing student who embodies these qualities both as a nurse and as a human being.

I was recently involved in an incident where I almost pinched off my two left middle fingers. I went to the ER and was quickly admitted for treatment; the service did not stop there.

I was in intense pain and the staff attended to me with quick and professional service. I believe their quick and efficient attention for my injuries was as effective as the medication for the pain that I was given.

As everything was unraveling, I was taking into account what fantastic service and care I was getting. I thought I had died and gone to heaven and God’s angels were attending to me— from the folks at admitting on to the entire ER staff and doctors.

I’ve been to several hospitals in the U.S.A. and you guys are second to none.

“It is with great sadness that I report the loss of Eric Tapley. Eric died the morning of May 22 after collapsing at Wal-Mart. Eric was well known around the medical center and immediately recognized throughout the Bloomington community dressed in his red scrubs plastered on our billboards. Eric was a great nurse and an even greater human being. He truly served ‘with the greatest care and love.’ I know the entire St. Joseph family joins me in prayer for Eric and his family.”

One year ago, we made Eric Tapley OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s unofficial spokesperson. We couldn’t have made a better decision. Eric was not only a shining star in our Emergency Department, but also in the Bloomington-Normal community. Eric was the type of person who his friends, family, and co-workers could turn to for advice, comfort, or a helping hand. When Eric wasn’t saving lives in the Emergency Department at OSF St. Joseph, he was showcasing his talents and generosity in other ways. Since its inception, Eric organized and promoted Bloomington’s “Nothin’ but the Blues Festival,” which brings crowds of more than 5,000 music enthusiasts to the Bloomington-Normal community every summer. The annual blues festival was just one of many ways he positively impacted our community.

We at OSF St. Joseph are mourning the loss of a dear friend and an exceptional nurse. It is through his example, that we, his colleagues, are better caregivers and better people.

Basic Life Support Saves Lives

In the wake of Eric’s death, we’d like to aim our focus on the importance of knowing and being Basic Life Support (BLS) certified. The sole purpose of BLS is to provide prompt and effective emergency medical care until full medical care in a hospital setting can be obtained. Often BLS can be provided without any medical equipment – as in the case of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and it can make a vast difference in paving the way for Advanced Life Support.

An American Hospital Association press release indicates that in many communities, only 15 to 30 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR, and each passing minute, the victim's chance of survival falls by an estimated seven to 10 percent.

Knowing “The Chain of Survival” is extremely beneficial for people suffering with cardiac (heart-related) compromise. The four steps of the chain are early access, early CPR, early defibrillation, and early advanced care. With the now widely accessible Automated External Defibrillators or AEDs, BLS education now encompasses the first three steps of that chain. From the moment of collapse to actual defibrillation is the single greatest determinant of survival.

For example, if a person stops breathing, he or she has only six minutes to live before irreversible brain damage occurs. Knowing how to provide rescue breathing or how to use a defibrillator could mean the difference between life and death if the ambulance takes longer than six minutes to arrive.

Fear and lack of training is most definitely the number one key issue. Often, the average bystander doesn’t wish to take on the burden of responsibility for another person’s life nor possibly risk their own. However, consider this: the risk of doing nothing is far greater than the risk of doing something.

Clinton Medical Group Collects More Than 100 Pounds of Animal Food

The family practice office collected more than 100 pounds of food for the animals and numerous other items as you can see from the photo. He said his son has been in 10 to 12 different hospitals and has never received the level of care he received yesterday and today at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. He related the nurses have been great, and the emergency department physician (Dr. Castillo) was exceptional. He said that he would definitely recommend OSF St. Joseph Medical Center to anyone who wants outstanding care. Newborns at OSF St. Joseph Receiving FREE Halo SleepSacks from OSF Auxiliary

Starting March 4, OSF St. Joseph Auxiliary began donating a HALO SleepSack to every infant born at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.

The SleepSack doubles as a swaddle and a blanket. The swaddle feature can be removed when no longer needed, converting the SleepSack into a wearable blanket. The SleepSack wearable blanket is superior to loose blankets that cover a baby’s face and can interfere with breathing.

The SleepSack was developed by a parent who lost an infant to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is the unexpected death of an infant, one month to one year old, where the cause of death remains undetermined after an autopsy and death scene investigation. Safe practices such as swaddling an infant can help prevent SIDS. Swaddling also helps newborns sleep easier by immobilizing their arms preventing Moro, the startle reflex.

Kris Bickers, Auxiliary Coordinator, said the SleepSack has become a popular baby shower gift because it is a safe way to comfort infants and help them sleep through the night.

“There is no other product out there like the HALO SleepSack. The number one reason the Auxiliary decided to donate one to every newborn is because it absolutely ensures safe back sleep for infants,” Bickers said.

The Auxiliary Gift Shop at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center will also have SleepSacks available for purchase in the shop. The gift shop is located in the hospital lobby.

3) I wanted to take a moment just to show my appreciation to a couple of the nursing staff that not only did their job, but also went the extra mile to make me feel at home and genuinely feel cared about. Gii was a night nurse that was kind enough to ask me when I would like to take my sleeping pill and if I wanted to take the pain killers at the same time. She coordinated all of this around my 30 minute antibiotic procedure through the IV. She also made conversation with me. My favorite person to enter the room, I was lucky enough to have both nights I stayed. Deb was warm and friendly. She made me laugh, had a gentle touch about her (like it was my mother caring for me) and made me feel like I was just a little closer to home. So, I just want to send out a special "Thank You" to both of these ladies. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center really found a diamond in the ruff with these magnificent women that do their job with a loving heart for their patients. A warm thank you, Gii and Deb, for making me feel so welcome and taken care of. I couldn't have asked for a more personable experience while being a patient at St. Joseph Medical Center.

4) An ED patient called to say what wonderful care she had in the ED last night. She said that she hates hospitals so was very apprehensive, but Dr. Sabbun and nurses, Andy and Lauren, made her very comfortable. Patient Advocacy Program May Be Incorporated into Japanese HealthCare

In the Japanese healthcare system, services, including screening examinations for particular diseases, prenatal care, and infectious disease control, are provided by national and local governments. Through a universal healthcare insurance system, the government provides its citizens relatively equal access to healthcare services, with fees set by a government committee. People without insurance through their employers can participate in this national health insurance program administered by local governments. As time passed, the Japanese government found an essential element of health care missing within their system: the concept of patient advocacy.

A patient advocate acts as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers. The patient advocate supports both the patient and the provider by assisting with potential issues and communication improvements. Recognizing the need for this service, the Japanese health department has asked a few groups to research patient advocacy and present their findings.

One of those groups sent Sawako Okamoto to Bloomington, Illinois, to study OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s Patient Advocacy program. Sawako, a researcher from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, chose OSF St. Joseph Medical Center after meeting Judy Swindle, patient advocate, at a healthcare conference in the United States. Sawako noted that of all the programs she had researched, many had no training incorporated; something that would be a necessity in

Japan

Judy had built a sustainable patient advocacy program for the medical center in 1994 and later developed training to coincide this new initiative. Within 24-hours of admission, a patient advocate visits the patient’s room to make sure he or she receives the quality of care he or she expects and there are no questions left unanswered. Based on what she learned at the conference, Sawako asked Judy if she could job shadow at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. From August 3 through August 7, Sawako took notes and discussed Japan’s need for patient advocacy with Judy and other staff in the Patient Advocacy department.

Health care in Japan struggles from a shortage of nurses and an ever-increasing amount of medical errors, which have doubled in 10 years.

The culture in Japan has also changed. Patients are now learning they can ask questions regarding their health care. However, there are still a large number of patients who rely solely on their physician’s judgment. “If the doctor says I should take this medicine, I should take it,” is the mindset of many Japanese patients – no questions asked - Sawako said.

What is more, because the patient has no one to turn to, patients’ concerns or issues are often overlooked. And because patients participating in the universal healthcare insurance system are free to select physicians or facilities of their choice, the patient simply chooses to be seen by a different physician. However, the miscommunication from patient to physician and vice versus causes inefficiencies. The new physician at the new hospital runs the same tests and asks the same medical history questions – just to make another diagnosis. This may or may not satisfy the patient.

From the physician’s perspective, this sort of misuse of resources is damaging to the system, Sawako said. In the Japanese universal health care insurance system, physicians are not allowed to say no to patients. If a patient arrives at a doctor’s office with or without an appointment, the physician must make time to see the patient that day. This situation not only creates a great deal of stress on the provider, but also causes them to work an unreasonable amount of hours. Sawako said some of the physicians find themselves barely making minimum wage due to the number of hours they work versus the salary they are paid.

In the Japanese health care system where nothing like it exists, Sawako said the patient advocate is a vital instrument to both patient and physician in the optimal delivery of health care.

“The patient advocate helps maintain communication with the patient and health care provider. This communication helps ensure patient understanding of procedures, prescription medicines, and overall treatment of care,” Judy said. “This process helps reduce fear and increases patient compliance, resulting in a higher percentage of successful treatment.”

While patient advocacy may not repair the complicated problems of a public-run health care system, it will save time and help patients become involved in their medical treatment, something many Japanese are still growing accustom to, Sawoko said.

“At OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, it is evident the employees are happy to work here. When a patient or provider does raise a concern, there is protocol set in place to handle it appropriately, and in a timely manner,” Sawoko said. “Japan needs this sort of communication between providers and their patients.”

Patient Celebrates 20 Years in Cardiac Rehab

This was not the first time my husband was a patient at OSF. Settling in the Bloomington area four and a half years ago he got to know the hospital quite well.

I saw the care given at that time and this brought me to get active by volunteering at OSF.

OSF St. Joseph to "Twitter" Patient's Hysterectomy Wednesday

OSF St. Joseph Medical Center Marketing staff will “twitter” a patient’s Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH) at 8:30 a.m., on Wednesday, January 27, at www.twitter.com/OSFStJoseph.

The patient has a history of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is the most common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. This disorder causes the ovaries to enlarge, while producing numerous small cysts located along the outer edges. Symptoms include prolonged menstrual periods and fertility issues.

To remove the cysts, the patient has undergone five dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures. This procedure involves expanding or enlarging the entrance of a woman's uterus so that a thin, sharp instrument can scrape or suction away the lining of the uterus, and thereby remove the cysts. During the last D&C, the patient’s physician had to remove one the patient’s ovaries due to the large amount of cysts attached to it.

After experiencing further fertility and health issues due to PCOS, the patient’s physician has deemed a Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy (LSH), or surgical removal of the uterus through the minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure, a medical necessity to reduce the patient’s further risk of long-term PCOS complications, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Because a LSH does not require the surgeon to make a large abdominal incision, it is a much less invasive procedure than traditional methods of hysterectomy. Also, in a LSH, the cervix, the bottom part of the uterus, can be left intact. Further advantages to the LSH procedure include: shorter hospital stay, much shorter time in the operating room, few side effects or complications during or after the surgery and less need for pain medication.

This will be the third time OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has twittered a procedure. The first was a craniotomy on April 30, 2009. Five months later, staff twittered a live birth on September 30, 2009.

The following is a letter we recieved from the family member of an OSF St. Joseph Medical Center patient:

The purpose of this letter is to include you in the experience my family has had here at OSF St. Joseph. My mom was treated in your critical care unit. She had a SEPSIS infection and was close to death.

At the time of her admission, mom was spiritually strong, but physically weak. With His help, your staff- your talented, skillful, compassionate staff- went to work and met mom’s physical needs. Immediate life support was provided until the problem could be identified, diagnosed, and successfully treated. ALL staff members here have shown us (her family) patience. They are a proficient and professional group- no exception!

Our special thanks go to the nursing staff at CCU. Susan D, Zach R, Taylor G, Ted H, and Cathy M. This group of caregivers is wonderful! They do not just “do their job,” they truly care for and about their patients and the family members. They are to be commended for the genuine and quality care they provide. Keep up the good work!

We Are Family

Employees can be found buying lunch for each other on a hard day or switching shifts for each other to accommodate family schedules and events, but really it’s the little things we do for each other that show most how we’re just like family here at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.

Over the years, Hans Gebhardt of housekeeping and Ultrasound staff have developed a fun friendship. He came to visit Ultrasound staff a couple of weeks ago, and they noticed that his work shirt was missing a button. Staff jokingly gave him a hard time about being too “revealing,” so Kelli Centeno offered to sew a button back on the shirt if Hans brought the button, needle, and thread.

A few days later, Hans showed up wearing the old shirt with a new button! Kelli had followed through with her promise to mend his shirt.

This is just another example of how we’re more of a family, than group of peers – going above and beyond for each other on and off the job.

“Here’s my story of Dr. Brad Smith: He came to my office to thank me for the thorocoscopy instruments. He stated they are working beautifully, and the patients have an incision only an inch long versus the 4-5 inch incision on their back. He told me “Jan you just wouldn’t believe how well my patients are doing”. Their pain is considerably less, because he stated the incision is what gives them the most pain post op. The patients have done great! He is ecstatic, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my surgeon so very happy! We love the Foundation, thanks!”

Human Resources Receives Rave Reviews from Former Patient

“I recently had a medical condition which required me to be a "resident" of your hospital from December to May 2009. During this time I was sent home for brief periods of time, but considered OSF St. Joseph Medical Center my home.

“I’m a teacher and it is in my nature to study occupations in order to enlighten my students. Since I had such a long stay in the hospital I had a chance to see lots of careers up close and personal. With marketing being my area of specialty, I am naturally very aware of customer service, both good and bad. I have to say that I am very impressed with everyone I came in contact with. The nursing staff was professional and top notch. The Radiology and Lab personnel were impressive. Housekeeping was great. But my favorite was the bright and shiny faces who delivered my food. When you think about it, there really isn't much to look forward to in the hospital. Meals are the highlight of the day. From the order takers on the phone to the delivery people, I was never disappointed in the "customer" service I received.

Bertha Jackson, cardiac screening assistant in the Center for Healthy Lifestyles, relayed us a story about a patient who chose to come to OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for brain surgery after hearing about all of the amenities in the Comprehensive Care Center.

The patient couldn’t rave enough about how great it was to have his son and wife with him the whole time he was here, especially when he woke up from surgery. The family went on to say how wonderful the nurses, doctors and housekeepers were at our facility.

“I have worked here 15 years and was a patient here five years ago. I can say the same thing,” Bertha said. “This hospital is the best!”

Meet More Ortho/Neuro Nurses

Marilyn Licudine has worked at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for more than five years and is from the Philippines. Her husband Mel, works in the Family Care Center at OSF St. Joseph Medical center and they have a daughter, Alyssa, who will be a fifth grader at Towanda Elementary this fall. Marilyn was the very first DAISY Award Winner at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Her co-workers adore her and the patients cannot receive better care from a kinder more compassionate nurse. She just returned from a short visit to her family in the Philippines.

Megan Lodewyck has been a fixture at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for years; first as a CNA and then as an RN. She has been married for three years to David Lodewyck and lives in Lexington. As part of her marriage agreement, Megan became a fan of the Chicago Cubs and now lists Ron Santo as her favorite baseball player. Megan enjoys singing, bell choir, theatre, and her friends. Beware of her hugs though, they can be “back breaking.” Our patients love Megan’s sweetness and her attention to meet their needs. Megan has been a part of the Magnet Recognition committee and is a past member of the Department Council.

Ortho/Neuro Works with OSF Stroke Team to Improve Skills

Over the last three months, Kelly Schuler, neuroscience leader, has been working with the nurses on Ortho/Neuro to begin documenting the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale on paper each shift. Since the nurses have begun using the stroke scale, consistency and overall competency of the exam has sky-rocketed. It has also helped the nurses chart the rehabilitative progress of the patient.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) stroke scale (NIHSS) is a standardized method used by physicians and other health care professionals to measure the level of impairment caused by a stroke.

60% stated they enjoyed demonstrating compassion, hand-holding, and comforting the patient and family the most.

20% stated they enjoyed the problem-solving aspect such as assessing patient problems through physical assessment, reviewing lab results, and assisting the physician in diagnosis or problem identification.

Neuroscience Leader Receives Thank You for Teaching Program

VIETNAM VET AND FORMER PATIENT SURPRISES INTENSIVE CARE UNIT WITH AWARD

Jared “Jerry” Convis, a Vietnam War veteran and former OSF St. Joseph Medical Center patient, visited the Comprehensive Care Center at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center on Wednesday, July 29, to present an award to the Intensive Care Unit staff members.

In 2006, Convis chose to have elective knee replacement surgery performed at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Three days into recovery, Convis suffered from sudden dehydration and cardiac arrest due to an unknown heart murmur. He was then treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Now in good health and feeling like his care at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center made all the difference, Convis said he would like to present an award to the ICU for “saving his life.”

Convis presented a patriotic plaque to the ICU staff at 10:00 a.m., July 29, in the Comprehensive Care Center, located in the medical center’s Center for Advanced Medicine.

“I’ve never been treated so well by total strangers,” Convis said. “OSF nurses and physicians really listened and treated me with great compassion. They deserve this recognition.”

Volunteer Services Gears Up for Summer

Recently, as part of the Mid-Central Illinois Volunteer Coordinators Association, Jennifer Sedbrook, director of Volunteer Services hosted a workshop on the “Health Benefits of Volunteering as a Recruitment Tool” featuring Judy Swinson from St. Mary’s Good Samaritan hospital in Mt. Vernon, who has published on this subject. About 40 people from various nonprofit organizations, churches and our local colleges and universities attended. It was held at Second Presbyterian Church.

June 9, Jennifer trained 40 junior volunteers to serve this summer in the hospital and in several medical offices. They officially started service June 15.

Employees Go Above and Beyond for Patients and Each Other

Early in June, a patient was scheduled to have cardiac testing at another location but the physician was really busy so the facility cancelled her tests. The patient’s mother really wanted to get the test done before she left for Europe on a school trip for the summer, so she called OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s Cardiology department. Our Cardiology department was really busy as well, but was fit her in that day and got all her testing done. The patient was able to go on her trip to Europe and her mother had the peace of mind that she was physically sound when she left the country.

Kristen Mooberry of Angiography was on call for the Angio Lab on a day in May. Her case was finished and she was able to leave, around 6 p.m., but her co-workers on the Cath Lab still had cases to go. Kristen went home to let her dog out, and returned with supper for the Cath Lab employees! She then helped them as much as she could so they could eat.

Dr. Les Ray, radiologist, was so complimentary to the Medical Imaging staff for their skill, teamwork, and exam coordination on Tuesday, June 2, that he bought lunch for the entire department!

Managed Care Employee Makes Sense of Patient’s Misinformation

Kim Chaon, manager of Managed Care, provided service to a patient last month who had some misinformation about her Medicare supplemental plan and was concerned that she could not pay her medical bills.

The patient, who had recently lost her husband and her son, was concerned that she could not pay her medical bills. Kim coordinated a discussion with the patient and her insurance company so the patient could learn more about her benefits.

Understanding health insurance benefits is not always easy, especially after experiencing a loss. Kim’s display of compassionate competency in resolving this issue is one example of how employees in non-clinical roles serve our patients with the greatest care and love.

Human Resources Relays Heart-Warming Story

I would like to share a snippet from a thankful employee. This employee has been off work for a while and is out of paid time off. Through co-worker donations she was able to get a partial paycheck this week.

The donations came in late so payroll had to cut a hand check. They called the employee to come to payroll (and she did not know the reason why). When Mary Brewer handed her the check the employee was overwhelmed and tears rolled down her face. The employee said she had been praying about her situation and put it into God’s hands and she knew that somehow He would take care of her and her children.

Never underestimate the power you have over someone else. A simple donation of four hours of paid time off by several staff can truly be a huge blessing to someone in need. It is a small sacrifice for each of us to make for our fellow co-workers.

Since word got out about this situation, Human Resources has received even more hours of donated paid time off for individuals who are in need.

Patient Accounts Makes Community Service a Priority

Recently, Patient Accounts developed a department goal to clean up a portion of the Constitution Trail from garbage and other debris. A handful of people from its office stood proud with coffee in hand on their Manager CJ’s porch at 8 a.m., Saturday morning and greeted him with smiles. Saying that…You never know how the little things can inspire someone.

“While doing the walk/clean up on our way back to CJ’s house, my daughter Lauryn and I were kind of far back from our group. She was very into finding whatever she could garbage wise. A walker was coming up behind us and noticed her pointing out something to pick up. This woman was visiting from California and was very moved by seeing and hearing about what our department was doing for the community. She said it inspired her not only to take her granddaughter out when she got back home, but to start up something like this within her work place. She is a division manager for one of the larger banks out west. Also later that day, when Lauryn and I were out again, she was still motivated to clean up and was looking for things while we were at the park.”

What’s New on Ortho/Neuro?

As usual, the Ortho/Neuro department’s weeks start out pretty busy with joint replacement patients. They pick up more patients in the middle of the week with the addition of neurosurgery patients. Add in a few hip and leg fractures, and by Friday most of the joint replacement patients are ready to go home.

Our joint replacement patients love group therapy where they experience a little friendly competition. Our star patient this week was an octogenarian with bilateral knee replacements and she showed everyone a thing or two about working toward recovery. Impressive!

Our Patient Care Facilitator Bev Branning keeps us all on our toes while auditing charts and collecting data so that all of us are better aware of patient needs. All the while Bernie Yates, our Charge Nurse and expert “IV Starter,” make certain we are using our rounding tools.

Getting to Know Our Employees…

Jennifer Cox, RN, is presently our youngest RN on the floor, but soon with two new graduates coming, she’ll no longer be the “new kid.” Jen graduated from Illinois State University in 2007, summa cum laude. Jen enjoys playing guitar, drums, and a little keyboards. Her dog, Josie is now beginning obedience school. Jen also enjoys dancing, music, and reading.

Therese Nussbaum is our Leadership Council representative and a long time employee of OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Her quiet, compassionate nature is something the entire Ortho/Neuro staff admires. Her biggest foe is morning meetings after working the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., shift. She does us proud though, and doesn’t miss a one. Some of you may not know that Therese has two children currently serving in the military. She’s mighty proud of them. As a sign of her quiet leadership role, she’s known as “Princess Grayhawk” to those co-workers who love working with her.

Laboratory Launches Phlebotomists’ Careers

Heather Zuhn, who has been a phlebotomist in Laboratory for the past two years while going to school at Saint Francis Medical Center School of Nursing, graduated with Sigma Beta Tau honors and will be accepting a position as cardiothoracic operating room nurse at Duke University Hospital starting August 3. Congrats Heather, we will miss you!

Sam Chwalek, phlebotomist in the Laboratory, will be serving his MT internship at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois, and Phlebotomist Ashley Quinn will be serving her MT internship at Bromenn Regional Medical Center. Good luck Sam and Ashley!

Mac Carlson, Raven Kuchan and Kelly Gresham, who work in Laboratory, passed their American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board exams. Mac, Raven and Kelly graduated from Illinois State University last December. Raven and Kelly, who were Medical Laboratory Technicians working at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center full time, went back to Illinois State for their bachelor degrees. All three are now MT (ASCP) certified.

Lori Rogers of Medical Records recently passed her Certified Coding Associate exam from American Health Information Management Association.

Vandalism Strikes OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s Garden Statues

June didn’t start out quit like we wanted it to. Police believe vandals caused the damage to our statue of St. Joseph and angel on OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s campus.

The St. Joseph statue, which used to sit in the Meditation Garden at the south end of the walking trail along Veteran’s Parkway, was found completely destroyed the morning of Monday, June 1. The Statue of St. Joseph was donated by Monsignor Joseph M. McGowan’s family. McGowan was an OSF St. Joseph Medical Center employee for ten years. Stepping stones near the statue were also broken.

A statue of an angel outside of Augustine Hall, the Sisters former convent which now houses the Finance, Marketing and Business Development departments, was also found knocked over with one of its wings broken off. Thankfully, Engineering was able to repair the angel. The angel was part of a display featuring the Virgin of the Poor statue. The original Virgin of the Poor display stands on the grounds of the O.S.F. Motherhouse in Peoria, and came to the Sisters as a gift all the way from Belgium. It is unclear if the display on OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s campus is also from Belgium or just a replicate of the display featured at the Motherhouse.

A police report has been filed. Hopefully, we won’t have to report any further acts of vandalism on our campus in the future.

How to Twitter: A Surgery

Some of you may or may not be familiar with Twitter.com, another social media Web site geared toward keeping users connected with colleagues, friends, and family.

On Twitter.com, you register a user name and then answer the question, “What are you doing?” It’s very similar to writing status updates on Facebook, but that’s about all it is. The average user is 35 and most of them are working people who use the site for networking and sharing ideas.

I like to think that I joined Twitter before it was popular, but truth is Twitter has been around for years. After having experience with it through personal use, I suggested the hospital use it to keep people informed about what’s going on at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. The Marketing and Communications department decided to create a user name for the hospital (OSFStJoseph). On Twitter, we first started “tweeting” information from our press releases and links to our videos on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/OSFSJMC).

But after “tweeting” with other hospitals across the country, we looked into the possibility of “tweeting” a surgery. Why? There are a lot of reasons we thought this would be a good idea, but the best reason we came up with is that through Twitter we can promote our services and educate our publics about what we have to offer.

How many people know what performing surgery is like? Very few and most of those people have been through medical school. This was our chance to share a behind the scenes look with people who may actually need the surgery or something like it in the future – or even for those who are just curious and want to know more about it.

I, myself, had never been in an operating room. I had no idea what to expect and so I guess you could say I was a lot like many of the users who followed along as we “tweeted” the play-by-play action in the operating room.

The procedure we “tweeted” was a left frontal temporal craniotomy for resection of a brain tumor with intraoperative monitoring. Why brain surgery? We had a patient that had already agreed to let a documentary crew film the procedure and so we asked him if he’d be willing to let us Twitter it as well. After explaining what Twitter was, he agreed and signed the appropriate patient information release forms for both the documentary and Twitter.

Right after Deann Moran, graphic designer, and I, marketing specialist, scrubbed in, I was pretty tense. I explained to those in the Surgery department that the extent of my experience with an operating room was watching Grey’s Anatomy on ABC. Next thing I knew someone was asking me who the actor is that plays Dr. Shepherd (McDreamy). “Patrick Dempsey!” I said. (My TV knowledge far outweighs my medical knowledge.)

However, little did I know at the time, Dr. Emilio Nardone, brain surgeon, was who I’m discussing my television intellect with. I was surprised to say the least. I guess I’m just one of those people who sees doctors, especially brain surgeons, as some kind of super human being, a celebrity-like person who I would never have the chance to debate plot lines on Grey’s Anatomy with. I was wrong. Doctors are real people and they operate outside of the OR too. (You’re welcome for the pun.)

Anyway, we finally got into the room and it was a bit surreal at first. The patient was already in the room and my first instinct was to get out the way. So Deann and I found a location for us to setup out of the way of the equipment and sterile environment. Still in awe, Dr. Nardone made his first incision and I was thinking, “I can’t believe this is really happening right in front of my eyes.”

Before the surgery I was afraid of not knowing how I would react to the situation. Would I hit the floor upon seeing blood? Or brain for that matter? I didn’t. Once I got one look at what was going on, I was hooked. It was by far the most awesome thing I’ve ever witnessed. And Dr. Nardone made it look like a walk in the park. He sat on a raised stool for most of the procedure with his elbows resting on two sets of pillows. Seemingly effortlessly he made his incisions, and dissected and removed tumor from his patient’s brain.

We “tweeted” the play-by-play with help from a medical resident who was observing the procedure and a couple of the surgical nursing staff who were on hand to record the procedure in charts and run to get any extra supplies the surgeon might need. The anesthesiologist was also very helpful throughout the procedure.

After the first couple hours of surgery went by and Dr. Nardone was well into the resection, he asked, “How’s it going over there on Twitter? Am I boring people?” I couldn’t help but laugh and responded, “How could brain surgery ever be boring?” He smiled (from what I could tell, since he had a surgical mask on) and continued on, never skipping a beat.

Throughout the surgery we took questions from users following along and Dr. Nardone welcomed and answered each one of them. After three hours in there Deann and I noticed that our knees and other joints were getting pretty stiff. After all, it was a chilly 62 degrees in the operating room and we weren’t wearing thermal wear under our scrubs.

Another hour went by, and Dr. Nardone was finished and my adventure was over. The surgery was a success and Dr. Nardone was able to remove the entire tumor with additional tissue from the surrounding areas. The patient was sent to recovery and I was sent back to reality.

While observing surgery was not in my job description, it has quickly become one of my favorite parts of my job and I’m very thankful I had the opportunity to experience it and share it with everyone on Twitter.

OSF Sports A Top-Notch Surgery Department

A comment card in the Surgical Staging Unit rated us top-notch in all five categories listed. The categories were “Helpfulness of the person at the admitting/registration desk,” “Staff kept you informed by explaining what would happen during your test/treatment,” "Sensitivity to your needs (privacy, comfort, concerns)”, “Overall rating of care received during your visit,” and “Likelihood of you recommending our Services to others.”

The patient went on to say, “I am an RN at a small hospital. My patients always comment on the personal care they receive at our facility. The care I received at St. Joe was just as personal and special. Thanks to everyone for a wonderful experience.” When asked “Is there a staff member you would like recognized for outstanding care?” the patient wrote, “All the staff I came in contact with were awesome!”

Secretary of State Jesse White, State Representative Dan Brady, and Mayor Chris Koos visit OSF St. Joseph Medical Center

On April 27, we had some very special visitors at the medical center. Not only the above mentioned VIPs, but also Annika Tiede, a young organ recipient, and Maureen McLeod, the mother of a 2001 organ donor. The group’s visit was sponsored by the McLean County Committee of Life Goes On and Donate Life Illinois.

The purpose of their visit was to spread awareness for organ donation. Secretary White spoke about how he learned the importance of organ donation and how he is working on the state level to bring awareness to the forefront.

Annika Tiede, 8, spoke about all the things she can now do because of someone’s generous organ donation. One of those things included telling her favorite joke: “Who steals soap in your bathroom? Robber Ducky.” She was a big hit with the crowd.

Maureen McLeod also told a touching story about how her and her son had the very important organ donation discussion when he turned 16. Her son chose to become an organ donor when picked up his driver’s license that year. Little did the both of them know how soon that decision was going to become critical. Just months after turning 16, Maureen had to honor her son’s wishes and donate his organs. By doing so, her son saved many people’s lives – some who have even reached out to her in thanks.

Currently there are more than 102,000 people on the national transplant waiting list.

In January 2006, Illinois law changed and a new donor registry was launched. By joining the first-person consent registry, it ensures that the person’s decision to donate will be honored.

In Illinois, a statewide poll revealed that 87 percent of Illinois residents know that registering to be a donor is the “right thing to do.” Yet, 40 percent of Illinoisans have not registered.

This note is much delayed. On behalf of my parents, I would like to offer special thanks to Mary Jo and Deanna for the care they showed to my dad, mom & the rest of my family during the past three months during two separate hospitalizations. My mom was able to rest easier when she knew Mary Jo was on duty. She was able to enjoy Thanksgiving because Mary Jo said she would eat dinner with my dad (he was on tube feedings at that point). Mary Jo even offered explanations for everything that was going on in terms my mom and dad could understand. She checked on my dad (and mom) on a regular basis. She exemplifies the compassion of OSF’s Mission statement.

Deanna showed very similar traits. Dad’s stay was much shorter the days Deanna had to care for him. She was very good about getting dad out of the bed and getting him moving. I know this helped shorten his hospital stay (the second time).

My mom commented almost daily that every staff member (nurse, housekeeping, and dietary) asked if there was anything they could do for her. This made quite the impression on her. I heard them ask this as well and I could tell it was sincere and not just a regurgitation of words.

Please let them know how much we all appreciated their work ethic and compassion.

Mr. Billboard, I came here because of you!

Whether he wanted to be an unofficial spokesperson for the hospital or not... Eric Tapley, RN, of the Emergency Department has been the face of OSF St. Joseph Medical Center advertising campaigns over the past few months.

You may have seen him on this billboard for our Magnet campaign:

Not long after Eric was featured on billboards around Bloomington-Normal did we have a patient come into the Emergency Department and say, "Mr. Billboard, I came here because of you." From that moment on, Eric became known around the hospital as our very own Mr. Billboard.

A couple of months later he was featured on the cover of our Healthy for Life magazine -May 2009 edition:

This past week Eric sent Marketing a very thoughtful message:

"I came to work on Saturday and every one of my coworkers including one doctor had on red scrubs. They said they were supporting me. It's funny when you know a group of people really love you and enjoy being around you. These are my buddies. I love them too.
For the past three-plus months I've, whether purposely or not, been one of the faces of St. Joes and with this magazine cover it continues. Although I am constantly addressed about this at work and home; I realize that someone thought for some reason that they wanted me to be pictured in that way. It is humbling. I'm respectfully thankful to be considered to be one of those faces. Although it takes a considerable amount of work for me to be on my best behavior, I do so gladly, and thank you for the confidence and acknowledgement that this mug of mine was worth representing something bigger than me. "

Emergency Department Patient Letter

Ms. Conte (Director of Emergency and Cardio-Pulmonary Nursing):

I am writing this letter in regards to a recent visit to your E.R. department. While I was there I had the honor of meeting a member of your staff by the name of Jennifer.

I wish to express my and wife and I’s extreme gratitude in appreciation for her professional attitude and compassion.

I know I was less than the ideal patient and at times was probably very taxing upon her nerves and patience with petty and immature statements and requests. But in hindsight when I look at Jennifer’s attitude and manner, I am impressed with her because in spite of this and many things I am omitting, Jennifer still went out of her way to make sure that everything was satisfactory and acceptable right up to the time of discharge.

Having been former medical personnel myself I know the stress and demands that working in a hospital or any medical facility can put upon one. It can and quite often does reach the level that nurses and personnel appear to be caring for at least 500 people at any given time, but to watch and interact with Jennifer you never got that impression. She made you feel as if you were the only one within the entire hospital.

In summary I wish to say that Jennifer as nurse is extremely professional and competent, as well as, a very compassionate and understanding person with the patient’s best interest and concerns at the forefront at any and all times.

May I offer as a suggestion that if there is anything that could be done at some point in time to honor and recognize her then please by all means make this possible for her.

In closing thank you for the experience we had through Jennifer as we went though those trying times.

Just a Sincere Note

Just a sincere note of thanks. As far as I’m concerned there is no better staff on earth. The nurses, the aides, and the house keepers were all so kind (even when in the beginning, I wasn’t). I owe a speedy recovery partly to your kindness and care.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to your facility and your dedicated employees for the care and compassion we received during the recent hospitalization of our mother. She died after a long suffering battle and complications of COPD. It took a terrible toll on our family to watch her suffer and our father was also admitted with pneumonia to the Family Care Center, as his wife languished in the [Comprehensive Care Center.]

Your staff was outstanding throughout our entire ordeal. They were all extremely skilled and professional in every aspect. As busy as they were they always took time to see to the smallest details of comfort not only for their patients but to us, the family, as well.

Although everyone who we came in contact with was wonderful we would like to recognize a few who were especially helpful to us.

A Patient’s Family

A Look Into The Past

One of our patients was going through a box of letters and cards from a deceased family member and found this card and envelope mailed on May 12, 1919, by Sister Placida, which was treasured enough that it was brought home by a member of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in France.

Here is the letter, typed as is:

Bloomington, May 9, 1919
Dear Sir and Friend!

It is with the deepest gratitude I thank you first of all for the beautiful medal you sent me. Indeed it was a happy surprise, when your dear Mother gave it to me. Many, many thanks. May God bless you for your kindness. A few days later you very interesting letter was with welcome received.

Hope your wish will soon be fulfilled and mawe we see you back healthy and happy as ever before. How are you by this time? Hope and wish you are well.

As your dear Mother told me some days ago did you have the happiness to see your Brother August, she seems to be so glad about having her Boys all soon home again. Your brother is home as you sure know, for some time - and glad to be.

When you write to your Br. August, please give my best Regards. - Excuse me for not writing sooner, Indeed. I am late to thank you, but nevertheless my thanks are none the less hearty and sincere. Will remember you in my prayers, and believe that nice souvenier will always remind me of your kindness.

As it is the Month of Mary, I ask our dear heavenly Mother to bless and protect you, connect you to Jesus and soon bring you safe home to your dear Mother.

The Phone Call

I've been conversing through e-mail a lot with a woman from Wisconsin whose brother-in-law was an ICU patient here at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center this January. I first initiated contact with her after she wrote us a very nice letter about the care her brother-in-law received at our hospital. We liked the letter so much, we wanted to use it for some external marketing and so I called to get her permission to use it. She said it was fine and was very appreciative, however her concern was that her brother-in-law may not want his name out there for all to see. We had no problem changing his name or re-wording the letter to make sure his privacy was protected.

Then, today I received a phone call from Karen, the patient's wife. She wanted to let me know that Steve, our grateful patient, was more than happy to have his name associated with our hospital. She said Steve received excellent care and it should be noted.

She also said that while Steve was a patient here, she came down with pneumonia and received her care at OSF St. Joseph. She told me that her and her husband normally go to the other hospital in town because that's where there in-network is and therefore had never really experienced OSF before. Karen said they were both elated with the care they received at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and would recommend it. I told her that I hope her and her family never need us again, but if they do they can expect the same quality of care for Every Patient, Every Time.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you how much our family appreciated the care given to my brother-in-law, Steven Smith, this past January 19-29. Steve had a heart attack while driving home from work, and was extremely fortunate to have excellent response and care from the Downs Fire Department and Rescue, and was brought to your emergency room. Through the skilled care of the cardiac staff, the heart blockage was located and a stent placed. However, he was in a coma and it was undetermined as to the amount of possible brain damage he might have.

He was admitted to the ICU where we saw first-hand not only the tremendous dedication and skill of the nursing staff, but also their caring attitudes that provided comfort to all of us. I can't rave enough about Lisa and Deanna. They patiently explained things, heard out concerns and assured us by their actions that Steve was getting the right care. They also helped us to understand what we could do to help him. Charlotte, the EEG tech, was another jewel, delightful in her positive attitude and professional in her duties.

During the most critical nights, we slept at the hospital in the room or in a waiting room. One of the night nurses on January 21, and I wish I had gotten her name, offered to make a sign “Family Sleeping” to put on the door to allow us to rest. The staff got us blankets and pillows. Helen, a chaplain, prayed with us and offered to look up a phone number that we needed. One of the unit secretaries paged Quality Resources for us to assure us that the insurance company had been contacted and would cover as “in-network” – one of the first questions Steve would later ask when he came out of the coma!

Denise, a housekeeper, asked how Steve was doing and seemed to genuinely be interested - rare for a housekeeper whose role may not seem central in a patient’s care. Steve’s mom was especially comforted by the conversation with her. On Saturday, another housekeeper asked kindly if there was anything she could do for us before she left – the compassion we received from everyone continually amazed us. On Friday another housekeeper who saw us coming from the cafeteria, a bit confused as to which way to go, volunteered, “Oh, you go this way – I remember you.” Another day a food service worker saw us looking puzzled in the hallway and stopped to ask if she could help us.

The doctors and nurse practitioners came by regularly and were willing to patiently answer questions. Steve’s neurological functioning was of most concern to us. Dr. Rick Lasher, neurologist, was especially helpful and warm. He took a call from us late in the day and took a significant amount of time to discuss the situation. When he visited Steve next, he took us aside and explained in detail what he was seeing, what we could look for and what we could do to help - Marvelous doctor.

Even your procedures are delightful! The “To everything, turn, turn, turn…” to remind staff to turn patients is so creative and the “Catch a falling star” signs on room doors is a very sensitive way to (I’m guessing) let staff know the patient is a fall risk. Your physical facility is beautiful and wonderfully family-friendly. Nicely furnished waiting rooms of various sizes, coffee stations, microwave and refrigerator, TV’s in waiting rooms and in the patient’s room for families made some emotionally difficult days bearable.

Performance can be regulated; genuine attitudes and demeanor cannot. It is obvious through the incredibly positive experiences we had with medical center staff in all types of roles that you as a director, must be supportive, inclusive, encouraging and compassionate toward your staff. Having worked as a social worker in medical centers for 27 years, I know that management’s treatment of staff has a huge impact on job satisfaction and provision of care. I applaud you and your staff and can’t thank you enough. Please, please, share this letter with everyone mentioned and try to find out the names of the ones I didn’t write down. If they can hear specifically how they have significantly impacted one family, then they may be encouraged to know that they impact hundreds of other families too.

Hospital Hospitality

I have a number of little stories for you from my first hospital rounding experience.

First of all, Deb Smith, Chief Nursing Officer, told me to stop by because she had a very special story to tell me about one of our employees going above and beyond to help others. Deb received a phone call from another OSF facility about someone needing a MRI before the patient’s son left to serve in the Iraq War. After passing the information to Lisa Zoeller, director of Medical Imaging, the patient found out there was a 2-week wait for out patient MRIs. However, Lisa wasn’t going to make this woman wait until after her son was sent half-way across the world. After all, he wanted to know what was wrong with his mom too! Lisa turned the 2-week wait into 2-days. The mother got her MRI taken and read with plenty of time to take in the news before her son was shipped out. Thank you, Lisa, for making an exception for an extraordinary situation. It made all the difference for this family.

While I was visiting the Emergency Department, Marty, RN, told me a story about a family who was displaced by Hurricane Katrina and came to receive medical attention for their son. The family had no insurance and had been to every free clinic they could to find out what was wrong with their obviously sick little boy. However, everywhere they went physicians and nurses told the family, he’s just constipated… it will pass. The boy’s swollen abdomen and weak phyisical nature was more concerning to Marty. Essentially, with few tests, Marty admitted it did seem like constipation, but something was different. Marty suggested a blood work up and even though the parents wanted to take off due to the discouraging “obvious” diagnosis, they waited patiently. And when the blood work came back, sure enough it was critical. This little boy needed to see pediatric specialists as soon as possible. The boy was life flighted to OSF Saint Francis where he was diagnosed with leukemia. Had Marty and other staff not been so persistent, OSF Saint Francis pediatric specialists said the boy wouldn’t have made it through the night. Now, the little boy is doing fine and his parents have since stopped by the Emergency Department to tell staff how thankful they are for the care they received. There’s a little peace of mind knowing that if I had an emergency, I know I’d be in good hands at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center. Thanks, Marty!

Up on the second floor in Ortho/Neuro, Manager Marcia Laesch bought her employees lunch one day due to the fact they had been so busy. Her employees turned around and threw her an impromptu birthday party with ice cream and cake. We love to see this kind of compassion to and from employees and their managers. We not only serve patients with the greatest care and love, we serve each other too. Thanks for being such a great example!

On the medical floor last week, there were three 101’s at once. What’s a 101? Yes, I had to ask. A 101 means a patient that needs constant supervision for any number of reasons. Because there were three of these, a volunteer was asked to come and sit in between two of the patient rooms. This freed up some of the nursing staff and was a huge help to the department. The volunteer stood guard for over eight hours. Our volunteers are the best! I don’t know what we would do without them!!

I also stopped by the Transitional Care Unit to see how things were going. It was pretty quiet, but word was that Max, the therapy dog, was coming to visit the next day. I’ll have to check back to see how that went!!! Patients in the TCU are always in for a treat when Max comes to visit. Thanks go to Gail Scoates, regulatory coordinator, for making it happen!

Busy Couple of Weeks in the Birthing Center

Needless to say, the hospital is ALWAYS busy. But the last couple of weeks have been very busy for our Birthing Center. At one time last week we had 10 babies in the Birthing Center, five of them being level-two or “border” babies, and at least one transfer to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Just today, it was reported that we have nine babies, two of which are level-two. While transfers aren’t abnormal in the Birthing Center due to the high quality of care offered to pediatrics and new borns at our sister hospital, OSF Saint Francis, having so many level-two babies is.

But have no fear, our Birthing Center staff knows exactly what to do and how to take care of these beautiful babies with extra needs. Staff were able to rent the equipment that we didn’t have on hand to take care of these little bundles of joy, and did so without skipping a beat — showing just how well organized and prepared for any situation our Birthing Center staff is.

As illustrated by how busy the Birthing Center has been, it is imperative the medical center have the space and the technology to ensure the quality health care our community needs. So in December, hospital administration filed a Letter of Intent to the state government for permission to renovate the Birthing Center and build an addition. This new structure that has been proposed will provide a state-of-the-art facility with a warm and compassionate environment – better care for our patients, and better for the community for many years to come.

With the recent submission of the Letter of Intent, our hope is for final approval to be summer of 2009, with groundbreaking thereafter. OSF HealthCare will finance 100 percent of the project with help from OSF St. Joseph Medical Center’s Foundation and its fund raising efforts.

Now, I’d just like to share a couple of the letters that we’ve received from patients over the past few months…

“I just wanted to write and tell you how appreciative we are of every single nurse there. Everyone was so nice and attentive and never hesitated to sit down and help me when things were hard. Having our baby at OSF was a great experience and we couldn’t have asked for better care. We will definitely be back!!”

“This letter is long overdue; however, I still feel it is essential. I have to commend one of you nurses, Brittany Haas. On [a night in October of 2008], I delivered a baby boy at only 19 weeks. Brittany was my nurse that night and she did a phenomenal job in the bleakest of circumstances. Brittany not only supported me throughout the delivery but was a true pillar of strength the entire night, both physically and emotionally.

All the nurses who attended to me that night were wonderful, however; the compassion shown by Brittany through the night is inexpressible.

It is impossible for me to put into words my deep appreciation for her. I will forever be grateful to Brittany for her kindness and compassion.”

Serving others with the greatest care and love… It’s what we do!

In my very first blog post, I’d like to tell you a little more about what I aim to do with this blog and how I am getting material to keep it updated.

First of all, we (medical center staff) are always looking for ways to tell our story. By “our story” I mean, the big picture. Every patient and every staff member we have at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center has a story to tell and we want you to hear it!

Everyday there are a countless number of experiences that are overlooked as everyday occurances. We are so used to serving others with the greatest care and love that we don’t realize how we are making a difference in the lives of our patients and each other.

I want to capture those special moments. This will be no easy task, of course, as many of our staff members are generally modest. But it’s one I am willing to take on!

I know how important it is to have quality health care, but not only that… I know how important it is to have nurses, physicians, x-ray and lab technicians who genuinely care about you as they are delivering your care. Here, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and at all the OSF HealthCare System facilities, we strive to serve every patient, every time with the greatest care and love in a culture of respect, regardless of age, gender, religion, or ability to pay.

So starting this week, I will be wandering around the medical center from time to time gathering stories from staff members, who are willing to share their story. From there, I’ll try my best to relay those stories to you. Overtime this blog will become “our story” or what you can expect when you visit OSF St. Joseph Medical Center.
